The Mais Lecture

By Rachel Reeves
Economic Change

In this lecture, Reeves argues that Britain faces a moment of economic inflection akin to the late 1970s, demanding a ‘fundamental course correction’ in policy and political consensus. She critiques the failures of narrow, market led growth and outlines a new framework – anchored in stability, investment, and reform, to rebuild productivity, resilience, and democratic legitimacy. Drawing on thinkers like Karl Polanyi and Joan Robinson, Reeves calls for an active state that partners like business, addresses regional disparities, and re-embeds economic policy in social purpose. Her vision, dubbed ‘securonomic’, rejects both austerity and laissez-faire orthodoxy, proposing instead a values-based capitalism rooted in long term planning, institutional renewal, and inclusive growth.
