On productivism

By Dani Rodrik
Economic Change

Rodrik proposes a new economic paradigm to replace neoliberalism, one that prioritises the spread of productive opportunities across all regions and social groups. He argues that governments must play an active role in shaping labour markets, fostering good jobs and revitalising local economies, rather than relying on market forces or redistribution alone. Productivism shifts focus from finance to production, from globalisation to community resilience, and from technocratic management to democratic engagement. Rodrik frames this as a supply side strategy rooted in development economics, aiming to overcome ‘productive dualism’ and rebuild inclusive prosperity through coordinated public-private action.
