The Working Sovereign: Labour and Democratic Citizenship

By Axel Honneth
Work

Honneth argues that democracy does not just happen in parliaments, but it needs to be built into everyday life, especially at work. He says the way labour is organised today often blocks people from being active citizens: low pay, long hours and rigid hierarchies leave little time or confidence for political engagement. His fix would be rethinking work, so it supports democracy. That means jobs that offer economic independence, time to participate, respect, and a chance to practice democratic skills. He is not calling for utopia, he is calling for a system where work helps people become full participants in society. His message is clear: if we want a healthy democracy, we need to democratise the workplace.
