The Wealth of Freedom

By Stuart White
Economic Change

White argues that economies should be designed to serve the common good, not just private profit. Drawing from the republican tradition, he redefines as non-domination – being free from arbitrary power and shows how current economic systems often undermine this ideal. The book proposes a radical shift: universal basic income, fair taxation of wealth and inheritance, democratic control over investment and public services, and strong trade unions. White also calls for participatory democracy in workplaces and a global Green New Deal to tackle climate change in a just, reparative way. His core message is that economic justice and democratic sovereignty must go hand in hand, both nationally and globally.
