What is the Point of Equality?

By Elizabeth Anderson
Inequality and Levelling Up

Anderson says equality is not just about handing out resources or compensating people for bad luck. She pushes back hard against ‘luck egalitarianism’, the idea that justice means fixing unfair outcomes caused by things like disability, poverty or low talent. Her problem with that view is that it treats people like victims who need charity, not equals who deserve respect. Instead, she argues for democratic equality: a society where people relate to each other as equals, with no one forced to grovel or prove they are unlucky enough to deserve help. That means focusing on dignity, inclusion, and making sure everyone has the basic capabilities to live freely and participate fully, regardless of how they got where they are.
